GPOH-STS Study Center
Since the 1980ies, the Cooperative Weichteilsarkom Studiengruppe (CWS) was founded and existed as European pediatric soft tissue sarcoma study group involving the countries Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland and Finland. CWS run several trials (CWS-81, CWS-86, CWS-91, CWS-96, CWS-2002P, CWS-2007HR) for around 40 years.
In 2005, the European pediatric Soft Tissue Sarcoma Study Group (EpSSG) was founded from the former soft tissue study groups AIEOP STSC/ICG, CWS and SIOP MMT with the aim to optimize treatment of children, adolescents and young adults with soft tissue sarcomas and rare soft tissue tumors. The studies RMS 2005 and NRSTS 2005 run in parallel to the CWS-2007 HR study. CWS could not take part in the RMS 2005 and NRSTS 2005 trials and founded the first soft tissue sarcoma registry SoTiSaR. CWS was not part of EpSSG for many years but was a separate European study group on STS.
In December 2024 the chairs of CWS (Monika Sparber-Sauer and Martin Ebinger) were officially elected by the EpSSG members to be part of the EpSSG Board. Now, one common European pediatric Soft Tissue Sarcoma Study group exists in Europe including all former CWS countries.
On a national level, the Soft Tissue Sarcoma Study Group of the German Society of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology (GPOH-STS) in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is study group coordinating projects and giving reference advice for pediatric and adolescent/ young adults with soft tissue sarcoma. All projects are national projects intended to be open for all European countries. The GPOH-STS study center, the organization of the Soft Tissue Sarcoma Registry (SoTiSaR 2.0-NIS) as well as the STS biobanking (STS 2.0-BIO) is located at Klinikum Stuttgart, Olgahospital. The national coordinating center of the FaR-RMS study (EudraCT: 2018-000515-24 und Clincialtrials.gov: NCT04625907) and the PerVision study (EudraCT: 2022-002793-91) is at the University Children's Hospital Tübingen.
The clinical reference consultation for patients with soft tissue sarcoma takes place for local treatment in the weekly tumor web-based conference Mondays at 4 pm. Please contact the GPOH-STS study center for advice regarding your patients.
Molecular and translational research as well as new immunological approaches are most important to improve future classification of sarcoma and treatment of sarcoma patients. The centers Heidelberg and Tübingen are affiliated research partners at highest level.
