Clinic for Vascular Surgery, Vascular Medicine and Transplant Surgery

The clinic's scope of duties includes the entire diagnosis and treatment of arterial, venous and lymphatic vessel diseases. Since 2012, we are part again of our transplantation centre and here, we are especially in charge of complex renal transplantations including simultaneous vascular reconstructions. This clinic is one of the largest vascular surgery clinics in Germany. Around 2,300 arterial interventions are provided within one year and several special outpatient deprtments examine and treat about 5,000 patients every year.

In 2014, we have performed 2,183 medical surgeries. In cooperation with other special departments within our certified vascular centre, we develop interdisciplinary treatment concepts and carry them out, such as endovascular therapy in case of aortic aneurysms and pelvic artery aneurysms or femoral artery stenoses as well as in case of complex forms of carotid pathology.

• Surgeries and stent implantations in cases of carotid artery narrowing (carotid stenoses) for stroke prevention, regarding case numbers (nearly 300/year), we are leading in Germany
• Surgery and stent prosthesis implantation due to abdominal artery widening (BAA), leading according to number of cases
• Operations and endovascular procedures in cases of thoracoabdominal aneurysms and dissections, including hybrid operations, leading according to number of cases
• Operations on renal and intestinal arteries
• Leg-bypass systems, particularly for leg conservation in cases of diabetic foot syndrome
• Dialysis shunt operations
• Operations on the deep pelvic and leg veins
• Treatment of varicose veins (classical stripping surgery and minimally invasive endovenous with radio waves or laser)
• Entrapment operations (knee and arm artery incarceration, TOS,TIS)

• Special consultation for carotid, abdominal/pelvic/leg arteries and varices. Dialysis shunts and TOS patients
• Angiology laboratory with colour-coded duplex sonography, Doppler, plethysmography measurement, treadmill ergometry

• Open surgery (bypass implementation) and endovascular therapy (PTA/stent) caused by circulatory disorder of pelvic and leg arteries for leg conservation
• Spinal cord stimulation (SCS), a minimally invasive form of therapy for patients with chronic pain caused by stage III and IV peripheral artery occlusive disease without surgical or interventional revascularisation options
• Endovenous (minimally invasive) treatment for varicose veins by radio waves or laser obliteration

• SCS-study (head of study), application of spinal cord stimulation in no longer revascularisable stage III and IV PAOD patients
• SPACE II study, comparison of carotid TEA versus carotid stent versus best medical treatment
• AIDA study, simultaneous net implantation in patients with abdominal surgery for incisional hernia prevention
• Video assisted minimal invasive endoscopic cross clipping in case of endovenous radio wave frequency obliteration of varices; a clinical evaluation study
• Prof. Hupp is a member of the guideline commission of DGG/AWMF and director of studies of the multicenter SCS study

• Quality assurance project on carotid surgery (BQS): Minimum amount exceedance in carotid artery surgery: 20 required surgeries, 276 carotid surgeries performed (Baden-Württemberg case number: 2,925, which means that Stuttgart Clinical Centre(Klinikum Stuttgart) provides 10 % of the whole surgery volume in Baden-Württemberg; surgery under local anaesthesia: 98% (in Baden-Württemberg: 41%); surgery as eversion TEA surgery without foreign material as a biological reconstruction): 87% (in Baden-Württemberg: 41%)
• T. Hupp is a member of the quality assuring commission (BQS) for carotid surgery in Baden-Württemberg (module 10/2) and acts as a consultant
• Quality assuring project on abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery: Minimum amount exceedance of abdominal and aortic aneurysm (AAA) surgery: 20 required surgeries, 159 performed surgeries (43 open surgeries, 116 endovascular stent prostheses)
• T. Hupp is chief executive of the German Institution for Vascular Medical Health Research (DIGG) of the German Association for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG). He is involved in the development of new further reaching quality assurance regarding Bach aortic aneurysm therapy.
