The Pharmacy supplies the entire Stuttgart Hospital and the Stuttgart Sana Heart Surgery (SHS) and other hospitals in Stuttgart with medicines and parts of medical material requirements. The picking process is largely automated.
In addition, the Pharmacy has the opportunity, to produce its own sterile and unsterile medication in appropriate GMP clean rooms. For example, in the cytostatics department around 28,000 application-ready preparations are produced for inpatient, day-hospital and ambulatory cancer patients. Parenteral nutrition of preterm patients of Olga Hospital is updated daily from the pharmacy and on an individual patient basis - as the youngest children so require medically. Also the production of specific preparations for eye or skin clinics are of the highest quality level.
The pharmacy has integrated central drug information offices not just for doctors and nurses of the hospital and of the hospitals supplied by the pharmacy, but also in the structure of regional drug information centres (RAIZ) of the Federal States Chamber of Pharmacists. So public pharmacies in the region can also have access to the hospital pharmacy's know-how. Also, pharmacists have a direct presence at the patient's bedside, in selected areas, if medical visits are accompanied. Individual pharmacists have their jobs directly at the station.
The pharmacy employs around 60 employees, including pharmacists, pharmaceutical technical assistants and pharmaceutical-business employees. The final stage of training as a pharmacist - the practical year - may be completed with six months in the hospital pharmacy and the pharmacy is a training centre for specialized pharmacists for clinical pharmacy and drug information.
