The Institute is responsible for pathological services of the buildings of Stuttgart Hospital, apart from which other hospitals in the region receive diagnostic services. The affiliated ambulatory medical office for pathology processes tissue samples on behalf of resident physicians and hospital outpatient departments. This ensures that the entire morphological diagnosis can be carried out considering each synoptic innovative diagnostic possibilities in pathology. At the Institute of Pathology more than 35,000 tissue samples are examined annually.

Special offers and facilities
  • Molecular pathology diagnostics for pathogen detection using PCR and in situ hybridization (e.g., herpes virus, toxoplasmosis, Pneumocystis carinii, tuberculosis etc.)
  • Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) for tumour diagnostics and in particular oncogene determination in breast and colon cancers
  • PCR testing for Borrelia detection, among other things through ticks
  • Implementation of resistance testing of Helicobacter bacteria in fixed tissue samples
Exceptional procedures in Diagnosis and Therapy
  • Forensic DNA analysis (e.g., parentage testing, identification and traces analysis)
  • Determination of KRAS mutation status (as a predictive biomarker in the anti-EGFR therapy for colorectal cancer)
Scientific activities
  • PhD project on comparison of methods for the determination of KRAS mutation status
Quality assurance (selection)
  • Regular participation in proficiency testing for KRAS mutation screening
  • Regular participation in proficiency testing for trace analysis
  • Regular participation in proficiency testing for parentage verification
  • Accreditation of the forensic division according to ISO 17025
