The Central Institute of Transfusion Medicine and Blood Transfusion Service offers all diagnostic, therapeutic and preparative transfusion medicine services to Stuttgart Hospital and many other hospitals in Stuttgart and its surroundings. Annually all necessary blood components for patient care are produced from approximately 44,000 blood donations. The entire spectrum of tests required to release this stored blood is conducted at the Institute. This allows the rapid provision of all necessary special preparations for a range of modern treatment methods, individually for each patient.
Compatibility testing, immunohaematological diagnostics and releasing blood components are offered around the clock. Among other things, the HLA laboratory, accredited by the European Federation for Immunogenetics, performs transplantation immunological tests for patients waiting for a kidney transplant. In the area of thrombocyte diagnostics, we conduct full examinations of suspected neonatal immune thrombocytopenia or heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Here it is possible to exclude the so-called HIPA test cross reactivity.
In addition, stem cell products are produced in collaboration with the Department of Oncology through apheresis for autologous stem cell transplantation.
