The centre Paediatrics 5 (Oncology, Hämatology, Immunology) at the Olgahospital – with its therapy ward "K1“, its day clinic and its outpatient clinic, is the leading paediatric haemato-oncological centre in the Stuttgart region.

It is one of the largest specialised departments fort he care of children and adolescents with cancer in the Germany-speaking region of the world - and also a point of contact for all other disorders affecting the haematopoietic system (as well as the immune system) in childhood and adolescence. A special area of emphasis lies in diagnostics therapy and follow-up care for sarcomas of the soft tissue and the bones. The treatment and research of these types of cancer is co-ordinated on a nationwide and pan-European level by the Study and Competence Centres at this clinic.

Due to the high standards imposed for modern therapeutic procedures, all patients are treated in the context of interdisciplinary networks – in co-operation with specialists from other disciplines based in this clinic and throughout the region.

The centre Paediatrics 5 is a centre accredited by the European consortium "Innovative Therapies for Children with Cancer“ (ITCC).

Treatment and care priorities
  • Paediatric oncology:  diagnostics and therapy of the entire spectrum of malignant and benign tumours with typical onset in childhood and adolescence

  • Paediatric haemostaseology: Diagnostics and therapy of blood-clotting disorders in children and adolescents - i.e., haemophilia, thromboses

Scientific activities

This clinic is the headquarters of the co-operative soft-tissue sarcoma study group CWS and the co-operative osteo-sarcoma study group COSS, two renowned International research associations which (in co-operation with European and U.S.-based partners) conduct clinical studies in young people with sarcomas (tumours of  connective and supporting tissues). The COSS and CWS therapy protocols define the treatment standard now valid for Germany and the neighbouring countries. Another Working group within this department conducts research on rare childhood-onset tumours. At the Molecular Biology Lab, genetic mutations that occur in the progression of paediatric cancer cases are examined. In May 2009, this department hosted the 22nd Annual Conference of the European Society for Musculoskeletal Oncology (EMSOS). The Medical Director is the Vice President of EMSOS and a member of the Executive Board of the Paediatric Oncology and Haematology Society.
