The clinic for diagnostic and interventional Neuroradiology is a central service provider for the Stuttgart hospital and for all hospitals in the city and region of Stuttgart and in this capacity is ready to provide services around the clock. The primary task of the clinic is to diagnose diseases of the brain, spine and spinal cord and performing all invasive diagnosis and all neuro-endovascular treatments. In addition, diagnosis of diseases in the skull base area as well as in the eye, ear and jaw joint areas is also provided. CT-guided biopsies, biopsies and therapeutic interventions in the spine, such as vertebroplasty, periradicular infiltrations and facet blocks are performed.

Treatment and care priorities
  • Interventional Neuroradiology (endovascular and percutaneous) of aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and dural fistulas
  • Diagnostic angiography of the supra-aortic, intracranial and spinal vessels
  • Early diagnosis and endovascular treatment of strokes
  • MR diffusion and perfusion images
  • MR and CT angiography
  • CT perfusion images
  • 3-D algorithms for visualizing CT and MRI data
  • 2 bi-plane angiography units, equipped with 3-D rotational angiography and Dyna-CT
  • fMRI
  • Spectroscopy
  • Myelography and myelo-CT
  • Endovascular treatment of neonates and children
  • Diagnostic biopsies of the spine and head
  • Joint facet blocks and periradicular infiltration
  • Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty
Special offers and facilities
  • Invasive Diagnosis, endovascular and percutaneous treatments
  • Special polytrauma diagnostics with 4-slice spiral CT
  • Magnetic resonance angiography of the neck and cerebral arteries
  • Interdisciplinary Centres: Neurocentre, Vascular centre, Craniofacial centre
  • Interdisciplinary Skull Base Conference
Outstanding procedures in diagnosis and therapy
  • Endovascular treatment of neonates and infants with congenital and acquired diseases of the brain and spinal cord vessels (e.g. the Vein of Galen malformations, congenital dural AV fistula)
  • Mechanical thrombectomy for acute treatment of cerebral thromboembolic vascular occlusions
  • Treatment of vascular diseases of the spinal cord
  • Treatment of pseudotumor cerebri through a stenotic intracranial sinus expansion (balloon angioplasty, stent implantation)
  • Treatment of intracranial arterial stenosis through stent expansion
  • Treatment of acute bleeding in the ENT field (nosebleeds, tumour bleeding)
  • Percutaneous vertebroplasty for pain treatment of sintering fractures and vertebral metastases
  • Treatment of acute phase ischaemic strokes by mechanical thrombectomy
  • Treatment of in-stent stenoses caused by drug-eluting balloons
  • Treatment of intracranial atherosclerotic stenoses through self-expanding stents with reduced radial force
  • Treatment of intracranial aneurysms with bioactive coils and haemodynamically effective implants
  • Treatment of extra- and intracranial stenoses with drug-eluting stents
Scientific activities
  • Publications, including:
    • Vajda Z, Güthe T, Aguilar M, Heuschmid A, Schmid E, Bäzner, H, Henkes H: Neurovascular in-stent stenosis: treatment with conventional and drug-eluting balloons. American Journal of Neuroradiology - accepted for publication
Quality assurance (selection)
  • Regular control of all devices
  • Regular control of radiological survey data, images and reports by the State Medical Association
  • Review of images and reports by the Doctors' Association of Nordwürttemberg
  • Participation in the central radiation protection verification by radiation physicist
  • Participation in internal quality management
